Q. I have an E450 running 300mhz cpu's. I would like to be able to upgrade to 400mhz cpu's is that possible?

A. Yes and no. Sun released two versions of the E450 running the 300mhz cpu's. An AA and a BA. You need to have the BA version. To check you would need to access the Part number of the system board or physically check jumper position J2701 to see if there are any pinsfor jumpers. The AA version physically will not have any posts. The BA has posts. The BA system board part number is 501-5270. In order to upgrade to the 400mhz\4mb cache cpu's the jumper needs to be across legs 2-3.

Q. I have several 18GB disk drives laying around with brackets. I would like to install them in an E250 that could use the extra storage. I called Sun and they had me reference the part number on the outside of the bracket which started with 540-XXXX. They proceeded to tell me that it was not compatible. The drive is the same form factor of the disks that are currently installed and running. Is this information correct?

A. The information may be correct. The 540-XXXX number on the outside of the bracket indicates an assembly part number which includes the disk and the bracket as a kit. More important though is the part number on the disk drive. It may be that the same drive you pulled out of an array is actually the correct drive for the E250 but Sun used a different part number to specify its use in the array. So what you should do is call Sun and give them the 501-XXXX part number off the drive itself.

Q. I have a Sun Netra T1125 and was recently inside the box for an upgrade. It looks awfully similar to our Ultra 60's we have here. Is it similar and if so can we use some of our offline Ultra 60's and their components for spares and upgrades.

A. Yes. Indeed the Netra T1125 does look similar to the Ultra 60 because it is the same system board. You can use the memory, CPU's, in the Netra from the Ultra 60. Cheap upgrade!

Q. I have received from a vendor a cpu upgrade for my E450. Sun tells me that it is not the correct part number even though it works in the system. It is supposed to be an X2244A and even has the correct 501-XXXX part number. What is this commotion about?

A. Well, what you have is the correct part number for your system, I am quite sure. Sun has two distinct divisions for hardware. SMCC and SME. SME stands for Sun Microelectronics and they are the OEM division that supports embedded applications. They preceed the part numbers with STP in many instances, and that differentiates it as an OEM CPU. OEM product is technically the same as the SMCC versions. SMCC just likes to charge you more so they attempt to decline service for OEM product used in SMCC hardware. Go figure!

Q. I have 64mb simms in a SS20 and am currently migrating to an Ultra 60. Can I use the memory in the Ultra from my old system.

A. You will need to verify 1 thing, is the simm a 60 NS simm. You can tell that by looking at the actually ram chip on the module. They have numbers and the last digits will say -60 or -70. You may use the -60 product in the U60. The U60 will support 16, 32, and 64mb memory modules if they are 60NS. Remember you must put 4 in at a time to fill a bank. Not one at a time as in the SS20 case.
